Salesforce to be Sold Off: Foolish Prediction?

November 21, 2007

There seems to be a lot of speculation going on recently on the eventual sale of Salesforce.com. Interestingly enough, this round of speculation comes just after Salesforce posted record numbers in Q4 2007. First a hail of news on the Q4 results, next a hail of speculation on the company being sold off. At least we know the earnings results are based in fact.

This Motley Fool article ( worth a read like most Fool articles for the laughs and occasional gem) describes several potential suitors and a few of the reasons behind an eventual purchase. In a related article from eWeek, the author goes to great length trying to explain why SFDC will soon face increasing competition from rivals (isn’t that a given?) and why Goldman Sachs is neutral on the stock. Interesting why eWeek would take such a stance considering the recent media fan fare about the company’s q4 results, the recent share price jump and positive ratings the company has received from other analyst firms.

But let’s get back to the original question: will Salesforce be sold off? I don’t think we’re seeing to many qualified “experts” give an opinion on this at the moment quite frankly. It’s easy to take a guess and say eventually a sale is immanent. Seems to me the Google Partnership announced shortly before Dreamforce brought on a similar round of speculation.

So will it happen? Perhaps. But my guess is it will be a while. Marc Benioff (SF CEO) has too much wind in his sails right now to think about selling out anytime soon. Again though, keep in mind: this is yet another opinion from a not-so-qualified expert ;)
