Oracle to Buy Salesforce.com?
February 10, 2008
A burst of chatter broke out around the web this weekend on the possibility that Salesforce.com is in talks with Oracle about a potential buyout.
Although the deal has yet to be officially confirmed or rebuffed by either Salesforce.com or Oracle, the idea has begun to spread like wildfire. For those of you who believe that everything they see on TV is true, I highly recommend running out and purchasing (NYSE: CRM) as you’re certain to agree that everything that gets blogged about is fact. (Ok I’m attempting a joke here. I jumped on the bandwagon and blogged about this too right?)
What will be interesting to see is whether this round of conjecture (read: chatter) will yield any boost in Salesforce.com’s stock, which is currently down to 50.87 (as of Friday’s close) from a 64.99 high in December.
The chatter started with a post by Tom Foremski on the Silicon Valley Watcher blog and quickly sparked several additional posts on leading sites such as Mashable.com, Bloggingstocks.com, and ZDNet, and will no doubt continue to spread as other CRM enthusiasts from around the web gain wind of the story first thing Monday morning.
Foremski wrote: “I’m hearing from a reliable source that Salesforce.com has approached Oracle to gauge if there is any interest in a sale at $75 a share. That would be almost a 50 per cent premium over Friday’s close of $50.87.”
See Tom’s full post here. Be sure to check out the reader comments for some additional points of interest.
Final thought: didn’t we hear about a possible Google buyout of Salesforce.com a few months back? To my knowledge that story came and went without anything of interest becoming of it. I’m inclined to think this is more of the same.

I marvel everytime I see rumors about buyouts for CRM. I submit to you that its just shareholders trying to vainly keep the stock price going up. This is a another bubble about to burst. Mark my words when the stock is single digits where it correctly valued.
I wrote a post about this and submitted to you on the night of Feb 9.
It doesn’t look like you give credit to those who provide you tips.

Hi Darren,
Thank you for submitting the tip. I appreciate it anytime news is forwarded to me by people in the SF community. On the other hand I did not appreciate the accusation about not providing credit.
I have several email addresses, only one of which I check frequently. I see now that you emailed either [info at salesforcetimes.com] or [salesforcedcpro at gmail.com] and unfortunately I only check these addresses every couple of days. I receive news from a variety of sources and found out about the rumor through several websites and blogs.
I will update my post about the potential sale to mention your post as well as I appreciate the tip and would have referenced your blog had I checked my email when sitting down to write out the post.
Keep in mind that this wasn’t done intentionally by any means, any heads up on potential news is always appreciated.
Spike: interesting comment as I noticed Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM) rose 7.55% this morning. Piper Jaffray has also reiterated a Buy rating on the stock as of this AM.
