New interview hints that IT departments need to keep pace with developments in Saas or face extinction.

The Wisconsin Technology Network (WTN) recently interviewed Peter Coffee, Salesforce.com’s Director of Platform Research and garnered his thoughts on how Software-as-a-service is affecting traditional IT departments.

The interview sheds good insight on how IT departments can evolve and take advantage of SaaS tools rather than continuing to control their territory through the use of proprietary systems. From the interview:

“The IT department is not dead,” Coffee said. “The IT department needs to become a more sophisticated evaluator of new opportunities.” In particular, he said, IT needs additional competency in evaluating and administering service agreements, as opposed to hardware, networks, and applications.
