Oracle Gives Birth to Salesforce.com Gives Birth to…

January 31, 2008

First Oracle alumni leave to found Salesforce.com and other ventures, now, the second generation of alumni are leaving to form their own companies.

Denis Pombriant, of CRM Buyer, posted an interesting article about the trend of executives from key tech companies leaving industry leaders such as Oracle and Salesforce.com to found their own ventures.

In particular the story covers the recent departure of Salesforce.com CSO, Tien Tzuo. Tzuo left Salesforce.com with Benioff’s blessing and started Zeora, a firm looking to provide on-demand billing via SaaS.

From CRM Buyer:

“Now, the next generation of alumni is making its way onto the stage: alumni of the companies founded by Oracle expatriates. Numerous Salesforce.com and Siebel alumni are beginning to take their places as founders. Last year, for example, former Salesforce.com Senior Vice President Peter Gassner started Verticals onDemand along with Siebel alumnus Matt Wallach as his vice president of sales and marketing.”

Salesforce.com Senior Vice President Interviewed

January 30, 2008

Wall Street Journal Interviews Susan St. Ledger of Salesforce.com

SFDC’s VP answers questions on previous VP roles withing the company,  previous roles outside of Salesforce and her thoughts on advanced education.
From the article:

Susan St. Ledger always thought she would go back and get her M.B.A. But too many, not-to-be-missed career opportunities got in the way. Ms. St. Ledger doesn’t regret any of them. Whether it was working as the chief of staff for the president of Sun Microsystems or introducing Salesforce.com’s Software-as-a-Service (SAS) platform to clients, Ms. St. Ledger found little time for hitting the books or sitting in a classroom. “I think getting an M.B.A. is a great thing, but I think you really have to balance it with, ‘What are the opportunities you’re faced with at work?’ “

Salesforce.com Stock Predicted to Climb 24% in next 12 Months

January 29, 2008

A recent article on Bloomberg, the financial services web portal, highlights recent coverage by analysts of Salesforce.com (NYSE:CRM).

In addition to the coverage by analysts, the article goes into detail on several other aspects of the company such as its force.com strategy (including force.com pricing), background on Marc Benioff’s progress since starting the company, and some of SFDC’s strengths compared to its competition.

From Bloomberg:

UBS AG’s Heather Bellini says the stock will climb 24 percent to $70 in 12 months, even though it is valued seven times more highly than Microsoft based on earnings estimates.

Bellini, the top-ranked software analyst by Institutional Investor magazine, this month changed her neutral stance and told clients to buy the shares because companies were creating programs on Salesforce.com’s computers, database and development software.

Giving clients a way to build programs online “is the Trojan horse for getting and retaining more customers,” Bellini said in an interview from New York. “We’re betting on companies that can show growth in a tough market, and we think Salesforce is one of them.”

Salesforce.com #2 Fastest Growing Tech Stock in 2008

January 28, 2008

Salesforce moves up from 3rd place in 2007 to 2nd on Forbes.com top 25 list in 2008, just behind Google.

Forbes recently released its latest 25 Fastest Growing Tech Stocks report that lists Google and Salesforce.com in first and second place respectively.

Although Google’s share price dwarfs Salesforce’s (about 11x more expensive in terms of price as of last week), CRM topped GOOG in the Earnings Per Share (EPS) category sitting at 40% EPS compared to GOOG’s 30% for the same period.

From the Report:

“It has been a rough 12 months for the stock market, including technology stocks. The S&P 500 is off 2.1% over the past 12 months (dividends excluded) and the NASDAQ 100 Tech Index is off 8.7%. But you could have done well owning the really hot technology companies.”

According to the report, Forbe’s picks from 2007 are up 16% over all to date.

Salesforce Times Site Updates

January 27, 2008

Just a quick note about a few changes made to the site over the weekend.

Due to a lack of easily accessible news for categories such as SF Consultants and Dev, I’ve dropped those categories and added an events section in their place. You’ll notice the “In the Mainstream” category has been replaced by Salesforce.com News  and that this category displays quite a few more stories now.

The other changes are mostly minor SEO and content tweaks. Thought I’d let readers know I’m working on things a bit each week and that the site will continue to improve. So far readership continues to climb and the community is beginning to respond to my requests for help with content so stay tuned! There are a lot more positive changes in store for the site.

Thanks for reading!

Adam
